Preparing for Mighty Duke
Supersized Crane Will Help Duke Medicine Relocate Helipad to Hospital Roof

It will be hard to miss “Mighty Duke” between June 10 and June 18. The super-sized crane -- the largest hydraulic crane in North Carolina -- will be parked in front of Duke University Hospital (DUH), its long boom and jib ready to lift steel and other materials needed to build the Life Flight helipads on top of the five-story DUH ancillary building.

The crane, operated by Edwards Crane Inc., is so huge it takes 14 or more assist trucks...

The crane will operate from a freshly created concrete pad in front of Duke University Hospital. It will hoist material directly from trucks to the new helipad location on the top of Duke University Hospital Ancillary Building.
