ADDRESSING GLOBAL HEALTH

Listening to Paul Farmer, M.D., you quickly get a sense of the unfair burden of disease on this earth:

• Tuberculosis, a curable disease, is still the leading cause of death of young adults globally.

• The life expectancy of people in many countries in Africa is only half of that in developed countries, largely due to high infant mortality and raging infectious diseases.

• Less than 5 percent of the 40 million people worldwide...


Paul Farmer, M.D., a Harvard physician and Duke alumnus, challenged Duke medical students to bring health equity issues to the forefront. “It is your generation that will help bring this idea into the mainstream,” he said. Farmer was visiting Duke to help raise awareness of the need -- and opportunity -- for Duke to take a leading role in addressing global health equity.
